Hiking in Sarek, Swedish Lapland

Let’s hit the trails

The King’s Trail (Kungsleden), stretching almost 400 km from Abisko National Park to Hemavan is the hiker’s stuff of dreams. We’re talking wild mountain landscapes, bubbling brooks, foaming rivers and high mountain plateaus. Swedish Lapland and UNESCO World Heritage site Laponia have a network of fantastic, wild national parks including Sarek and Abisko. In all, Sweden has 29 national parks stretching the length and breadth of the country and you have free access to all of them.

In central Sweden, in the province of Dalarna there is a great trail along The Vasalopp Trail (Vasaloppsleden). So if you’re coming in spring, summer and autumn you can hike it, or in wintertime you can cross-country ski it.

In the more temperate south of the country check out the Blekinge, Skåne and Halland trails. And still in the south the John Bauer Trail and The Emigrant Trail (Utvandrarleden) are great examples of theme trails in the province of Småland.

Or in the west there are more wonderful theme trails; The Pilgrim Trail (Pilgrimsleden) in Dalsland province, and Bruksleden, in the province of Västmanland.

Sweden has the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) enshrined in its constitution. It means you can go anywhere you want in the country as long as you leave the surroundings the way you found them – undisturbed.
