Animals & pets

It is possible to bring pets to Sweden from other EU and EFTA countries but visitors are recommended to start the planning process well in advance since several permissions must be obtained.

From 3 July 2004, the following is required for import of cats and dogs from another EU Member State:

Identification by means of a microchip or a clearly legible tattoo.

Vaccination against rabies in accordance with the recommendations of the vaccine manufacturer, using a vaccine that has been approved by the WHO (no vaccination is required in the case of direct import from the United Kingdom or Ireland).

Antibody test showing rabies antibodies of at least 0.5 IU/ml. This test shall be taken no less than 120 days and no more than 365 days after the most recent rabies vaccination, which means that these time limits are the same as in the current rules (no antibody test is required in the case of direct import from the United Kingdom or Ireland).

Deworming against tapeworm (Echinococcus spp.) performed by a veterinarian using a preparation containing praziquantel ten days or less before the time of import. People who commute between Denmark and Sweden may continue to use the four-week certificate.

Documentation in the form of a passport where the competent veterinarian notes all necessary measures.

A request for permission should be made to The Swedish Board of Agriculture:
