‘The Goat’ by Robert Rauschenberg is a paint spattered (dead) goat with a car tire around it. A conversation piece if ever there was one it begs the question “What is it supposed to mean”. And that, in a nutshell, is why you should visit this internationally renowned museum.

If you visit the museum you can view the ‘In our time’ presentation of the collection divided into three time periods: 1900-39, 1940-69 and 1970 and onwards. Except that you go through the collection backwards, the latest works first.

The Moderna Museet collection of contemporary and pop art is impressive, even by European standards. For example, 2008 sees the return of Andy Warhol works to the museum, bringing together the famous pop artist’s works with his films from the 1960s, including ‘Sleep’ and ‘Empire’. This is not to be missed.

Take our advice and give Moderna Museet at least half a day of your time. It has a great restaurant, a relaxing café and an extensive shop where you can buy books, posters and some very cool Scandinavian design items.
