All of southern sweden is ideal for both hiking and bicycling, with plenty of scenic small roads and well-marked trails stretching between an abundance of attractive towns, villages, sights and attractions. You can travel at your own pace, overnighting in comfortable hotel beds after a fine meal in a wide selection of pleasant hotels and inns – or you can travel in simpler fashion, even carrying your own tent, sleeping in the beautiful wilderness. Skåne and the picturesque island of Gotland are two favourite regions for cyclists, while the fairy-tale lakes and forests of Småland, Östergötland, Västergötland and Dalsland attract hikers and campers from near and far. Hiking holidays in spring and autumn, when the landscape is at its most peaceful, are growing in popularity among international visitors. In winter, hiking can often be replaced with cross country skiing, although snow is usually moderate in the mild climate of southern Sweden.
Several districts throughout the south of Sweden are paradises for canoeists and kayakers. Most famous is the beautiful forest region of Dalsland, with the Dalsland Canal, offering no less than 240 kilometres of navigable waters, framed by scenic camping sites – a canoeing eldorado, generally considered as one of the most scenic waters systems anywhere in Europe. Västergötland, Småland and northern Skåne also offer attractive rivers and lakes for freshwater paddling. For saltwater kayaking, the archipelagos all around the long southern Swedish coastline are destinations of great beauty and diversity. There are unique archipelagos outside the regions of Östergötland, Blekinge, and all along the west coast, with thousands of islands and barren skerries, most of which are uninhabited. Here you will find numerous camping sites in magnificent settings where you can savour the priceless natural luxuries of solitude, peace and calm.
First-rate fishing, too, is possible all over southern Sweden. One of the country´s most famous and exclusive salmon waters is the Mörrumån river in the Blekinge region in the southwest. Dalsland, Småland and Västergötland all offer attractive freshwater fishing in a variety of lakes and rivers, while the above-mentioned archipelagos are havens for saltwater fishing, with many picturesque fishing villages all along the coasts, where you can rent boats and fishing equipment, and hire fishing guides.
There is also excellent scope in southern Sweden for more strenuous outdoor activities such as climbing, bouldering and mountain biking in Bohuslän, Västergötland, Småland, and along Skåne´s northwestern coast.
Golf in southern Sweden is a huge attraction. The region of Skåne alone has over 70 courses of generally very high standards, including some of Northern Europe’s finest, and many of them are open most of the year. Halland and Blekinge also have many attractive courses in scenic seaside settings.
