Sunny Öland is a favourite holiday destination for Swedish families who rent cottages or stay at one of the 25 well-run campsites or holiday villages on the island. There is also a fabulous choice of holiday cabins, cottages and chalets.
Expect sun, sea, long white sandy beaches and bundles of family activities. In fact the Swedish Royal Family holiday here every summer, and stay at Solliden. You should pay this white Italian country house-style palace a visit too.
Öland’s non-regal campsites are very well run and maintained and many are ‘self-contained’ with shops, entertainment and family activities. Some of the most scenic beachside campsites are on the north of the island, one of them is Böda Sand.
Must sees (..and do’s) on Öland include Borgholms Castle, a beautiful castle ruin with loads of kid’s activities June- August. For hands-on activities go to Eketorp Fortress a rebuilt ancient fort and do some forging and pole pillow fighting.
In the south of the island you can go ancient at the Gettlinge burial ground, or visit ‘Stora Alvaret’ a giant limestone plateau with unique biodiversity and pre-history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If giant limestone plateaus don’t do it for you try Ölands Animal and Amusement Park. It is home to 160 species of animal, has a corking amusement park and features a water park and ‘Pirate Park’.
Visit the Fjärdestaden tourist office by the Öland bridge on Öland for information on the best beaches and picnic spots.
Go here for everything Öland.
