Pleasures by the sea

The long, languishing coastlines that lie to the east and west in southern Sweden are dotted with fishing harbours and marinas, coastal towns and beach resorts set against a natural backdrop that is as uniquely Swedish as it is gorgeous. Just off the coast, the islands of Gotland and Öland are waiting to show you their charms.

The Swedish west coast archipelago is world famous for its unspoiled islands and islets and is a paradise for boaters. But if you’re boatless, you can access it by ferry from Göteborg, Strömstad and other coastal towns. Take a day trip or embark on a longer island-hopping excursion to enjoy simple, free pleasures such as swimming, sunbathing and beachcombing, or crab fishing from jetties or stony beaches. Along the coastline there are fishing ports and coastal towns with hotels, inns and restaurants. In the restaurants here look our for the “catch of the day” offers.

Halland and Skåne also have rocky coastlines, such as the scenic Kullaberg peninsula and the famous and dramatic Hovs hallar on the Bjäre peninsula, near Torekov. These landscapes are famed for their many mile-long, white sandy beaches and rolling dunes that most visitors are surprised to see at these latitudes. Some of the most beautiful and popular of these beaches are Tylösand, Mellbystrand, Varberg and Laholm in Halland, and Skanör, Sandhammaren, Haväng and Åhus in Skåne.

On the east coast, there are paradise-like island groups off the coasts of Blekinge and Östergötland. These are ideal for boating, canoeing or fishing holidays and for relaxing nature experiences far from the madding crowds.
