The city buzz

With 120 000 inhabitants, Umeå is northern Sweden’s largest urban community. It’s also the fastest growing city in the country and home to more than 30 000 university students. Vibrant is one word to describe Umeå. Open and creative two other. Exciting events take place every day of the week and new shops, hotels and restaurants are popping up in every corner.

In love with culture

It’s not hard to understand why Umeå was the European Capital of Culture in 2014. The locals are in love with culture and as a visitor it’s easy to access the rich cultural life. In winter the annual Sami week, a celebration of Sami culture, lets you experience and learn about Sami art, music, culture and language. In summer, thrilling festivals and events like Brännbollsyran and Umeå Live attract both locals and vistors. Dance, theather, sports or concerts with famous national and international artists – there is something for everyone!  

If you like going to museums Umeå has plenty to offer. Västerbottens museum is the regional museum where you will learn everything about our history and culture. Music lovers will find heaven in Guitars – the museum, with its world-class collection of electric guitars, electric basses and other rock’n’ roll accessories from the 1950s onwards. Bildmuseet is the centre for contemporary art and other forms of visual expressions. Let yourself be impressed by the building's special architecture and in the museum shop you can shop for a wide array of fun and unique items that make great souvenirs and gifts. Also make sure you do not miss The Women’s history museum, unique in its kind. It is a place for action, reaction, laughter and debate.

Umeå for foodies

It’s delicious to visit the Umeå region! Here you will find culinary offerings with both breadht and depth and a love for local ingredients. No fewer than ten of the regions restaurants have etablished themselves in The White Guide, the country´s top publication for restaurant recommendations. Several of the regions cafés are also included. Umeå´s new cultural centre, Väven, and its indoor square have become something of a hub as regards good food. This is where you will find Gotthards Krog, which offers deligthtful food in a unique setting. It is not for nothing that leading British newspaper The Guardian lists this restaurant as one of the world’s ten coolest!

When in the region pay a visit to at least one of all the farm shops. Many are open for visits, offering everything from jam, cheese, eggs, meat and potatoes to home-made delicacies such as ice cream and chocolate. You will also find locally produced handicrafts.

A shopping eldorado 

Umeå is not only the largest urban community in northern Sweden - it´s also the trendiest shopping city in the north! The main shopping area is right in the heart of the city. Don’t miss the special boutiques that are unique to the city. You will find characterful shops offering everything from interior and special design to handicrafts and the latest in fashion. Everything within walking distance!

Take a countrybreak

Getting out on the countryside, alone or with a guide, is easy in Umeå region. 800 km of winding coast, beaches, beautiful forests and delightful destinatons. There is also the River Country, where four mighty rivers run (Öreälven, Lögdeälven, Vindelälven and Umeälven). Ferocious rapids and water full of fish in the middle of breathtaking wilderness. Try whitewater rafting or glide quitely and peacefully downstream on a timber raft. Join a beaver safari or ramble along the many scenic walking trails that are dotted with barbecue sites and cabins for overnight stays. Of course there are dogsledding adventures and expeditions offered and why not end your tour with a cosy bed on a Viking camp, or perhaps high up in the trees in a bird nest?
