Merry Xmas from Malmö

Christmas celebrations kicked off in Malmö last Sunday with “Shop Window Sunday” when the city’s shops try to out-do each other with the most attractive window display. It’s quite a sight as there are more than 800 shops and counting in Malmö.

Talking of displays, the entire city of Malmö will be illuminated for the festive season and at Gustav Adolfs Torg there will be the ceremonial lighting of the city’s Christmas tree, as well as concerts and entertainment. Not to be missed is the coronation of Lucia, the Swedish celebration of light, on 13th December at Stortorget. It is a beautiful, atmospheric and touching occasion that you can read more about here.

Another great Malmö tradition is its Xmas markets where you can admire and buy traditional handicrafts, foodstuffs, traditional Christmas decorations and lots more. The main Xmas markets are at Södertull, Malmöhus Castle, Katrinetorps farm and Drottningtorget. If you get tired of shopping, which we doubt, try the “Wintermezzo” at Stortorget, a winter wonderland of ice sculptures, activities and entertainment.

The great thing about Malmö is that all the main shopping areas and Christmas markets are within walking distance of each other, mainly along pedestrian walkways – so no car exhaust fumes to worry about. Ideal conditions for shopping in other words. And shopping there is in Malmö with plenty of shops and 7 malls; Hansa, Triangeln, Caroli, Balthazar City, Storgatan, Åhléns, Mobilia and Entré. So no excuses for not buying the entire family a Christmas present from Malmö.

Round off your Christmas visit to Malmö by visiting Möllevången – an area packed with smaller shops and eateries offering international cuisine. And, of course, Christmas specialities.

Christmas in Stockholm

Strolling along the narrow cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan (the Old Town) in Stockholm, the snow crunching and creaking beneath your feet, you are part of a scene from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” – the church bells ring out and the streets and alleyways open into squares playing host to centuries-old Xmas markets.
