With the main museums conveniently housed in Malmöhus Castle, Sweden’s oldest and best-preserved Renaissance castle, viewing the fascinating collections couldn’t be easier. For example, the Art Museum houses a comprehensive collection of Nordic art encompassing paintings, sculptures, furniture, decorative and applied arts, drawings and prints. The museum has the largest collection of 20th century Nordic art in Sweden and names to look out for include; Dan Wolgers and Nina Roos. Artists of yesteryear to keep an eye out for are; Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Carl Fredrik Hill, Per Krohg and Alexender Roslin. The museum also has a permanent exhibition of art from the 16th century to the present day and has a busy schedule of upcoming exhibitions, presentations and events.

The Museum of Natural History is also located in Malmöhus and here you are presented with a collection of life-like stuffed animals, that no natural history museum should be without. The diversity of nature and animal life is presented in ‘Colour, Form and Design’ an exciting permanent exhibition and in the aquarium in the basement you can see live amphibians, electric eels and piranhas.

One of Malmö’s museums not housed in Malmöhus Castle is Malmö Konsthall. This fine gallery would be worth visiting for its use of light and space even if there was no art in sight. The main hall is one of Europe’s largest for contemporary art and it is used to brilliant effect to present its collections.

The paintings, sculptures, installations etc cover the major modern and contemporary movements and styles and are set against a background of natural and artificial light that gives the artist unlimited possibilities to present their art and you to view it. Of particular note is the Schyl Collection, an international collection of art reflecting the most important movements and directions within contemporary art, particularly over the last two decades.

Otherwise, the gallery has many fascinating exhibitions and programmes year-round, as well as an open-air restaurant and bookshop for you to enjoy.

Find out about the fascinating history of Malmöhus when you visit. One quirky detail is that it used to be a prison and some fairly famous people were locked up here.
