As you enter Moderna Museet Malmö you are met by Rauschenberg's 'the Goat' (a goat with a painted face and a car tyre wrapped round its torso). This world-famous piece gives you an idea of the importance of Moderna Museet Malmö and a quality that is a constant throughout its exhibitions, galleries, collections and the space that it is housed in. The big brother of Moderna Museet Malmö, if you didn't already know, is Moderna Museet in Stockholm, which is the only museum north of Amsterdam with an international art collection covering the entire 20th century.
Modern Museet Malmö is located at Gasverksgatan 22 and is a 10-minute walk from the Central Station in the city, or a short bus ride away. Being home to a museum of this international standing is something quite special for Malmö and the entire Öresund region, which continues to develop on both sides of the Öresund Bridge that joins Denmark and Sweden. No less special is the space in which the exhibitions and collections are housed. The building dates from 1909 and the museum fills up what used to be a turbine hall, in addition to a new annex fronted by an orange-red façade. The intention being that visitors will be led round a 'loop' of the old and new while taking in the fascinating exhibitions. And it should be a quite a loop, given that along with its own independent exhibition programme, run in collaboration with Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the museum will show contemporary art's most important artists and modern classics, alternating with a selection of Moderna Museet Stockholm's rich collection from 1900 onwards.
This is an 'art marriage' made in heaven and one that you shouldn't miss when you are in Malmö.
