Beach life in Malmö
Malmö is one of the few cities anywhere where you can enjoy fine sandy beaches and the summer heat without leaving the city. The 2.5 kilometre long Ribersborg beach – Scandinavia’s Copacabana - is where the young, the old, the bold and the beautiful of Malmö and visitors from around the world enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or just generally lazing around the summer months.
Ribersborg Kallbadhus (seawater bathing facility) sits on a pier that juts out into the Öresund, the body of water that once separated Malmö from Denmark’s coast. Here you can enjoy bathing in your birthday suit, or with swimwear on (it is a nude bathing facility) separate male and female saunas, a restaurant and café and, for the ladies only, a solarium and massage.
Facing Denmark on Ribersborg beach, on your right hand side lies Västra Hamnen (West Harbour). The landmark “Turning Torso” building twists and turns skywards almost 200 metres above this new seaside cityscape of apartment and office buildings, beaches and beachfront. It is hard to believe that this was once a run-down harbour area. The beachfront here is packed with restaurants, bars, cafés and nightclubs and it is bursting with life, especially in the summer months.
From Västra Hamnen you get stunning views of the 8-kilometre long Öresund Bridge, graciously arching its way over to the coastline of Denmark that you can see on a clear day. For the best views go to the Luftkastellet lookout point.
If you want to enjoy the beach life in Malmö the best time to come is in the summer months. Year-round however, Malmö and the new Västra Hamnen district are fabulous destinations for a taste of south coast of Sweden.
Malmö is the epitome of a “garden city” with the stately and beautiful Folkets Park, Slottsparken, Pildammsparken and Kungsparken forming a green corridor between the beaches at Ribersborg and the Stadion area of town to the north-east.
