The main shopping district includes the streets of Kungsgatan and Vallgatan, where there are a wide range of fashionable boutiques, shops, cafés, arcades and shopping malls, as well as outlets for the major Swedish high street fashion chains. For trendy fashion, design, interior and gift shopping, Magasinsgatan, which crosses Kungsgatan, is the new hotspot. On and around the city´s main thoroughfare, the showcase Avenyn boulevard (Gothenburg´s equivalent of Barcelona´s Las Ramblas) is where you´ll find most of the high-end shops and department stores, including the classic NK.
From Avenyn, you can enjoy the short stroll through Vasastan to the cosy former blue collar district of Haga, with its many charming old wooden buildings. Here you´ll find a shopping scene of younger, trendier and more bohemian character, with a variety of interesting fashion, design, handicraft, antique and vintage clothing shops, record stores and art galleries, as well as numerous charming cafés, bars and restaurants. The area around the nearby Linnégatan street is another trendy and slightly bohemian shopping district, offering an array of fashion shops, galleries, bookshops, gourmet restaurants, antique and vintage shops. In the Kungstorget square, by the Saluhallen food market, there is a lively open-air market worth a visit on weekends. The beautiful Saluhallen food market, opened in 1889, offers a wide range of tempting shellfish, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats and various regional specialities for those of you who enjoy some gastronomic indulgence.
If you´re in for some real power shopping, there is of course also Nordstan, Sweden´s largest shopping mall, with some 150 shops under one roof, located near the city’s Central Station. Nordstan frequently hosts popular events such as handicraft exhibitions, fashion shows and various happenings.
