Start your tour of Gothenburg’s historical buildings at the imposing Gothenburg City Museum, a building dating from 1750, at Norra Hamngatan 12.
The political centre of Gothenburg is at Gustav Adolfs Torg (square). Here you’ll find Gothenburg City Hall, built in 1673 and its much more modern annex designed by Gunnar Asplund.
For some fishy architectural history and delicious West Coast Sweden seafood visit the Feskekörka (the Fish Church) at Rosenlundsgatan. This architectural experiment built in 1874 does look like a church and does have the best, freshest seafood in Gothenburg at its fish market and restaurants.
For more churches, but of the non-fish variety visit Vasa Church at Engelbrektsgatan built in 1909 in the Swedish version of Art Nouveau. For older churches look no further than Gothenburg Cathedral at Kyrkogatan 28 (you can’t miss it) from 1815, Christiane Church (also known as ‘German Church’) from 1748 at Norra Hamngatan and Örgryte Church, dating from the mid 13th century at Danska Plan.
Trendy old Haga
The oldest and one of the most characterful areas of Gothenburg is the Haga district from the 18th century. Formerly a low-rise, wooden-housed area falling into disrepair it is now officially cool. Tread the cobblestone streets, find cool gear at its vintage and second-hand stores and stop-off at one of the area’s excellent cafés.
For a glimpse into how the other half lived in the 18th century in Sweden visit creamy coloured, neoclassical-architecture Gunnebo House and Gardens, just 10 minutes by bus or car from downtown Gothenburg. It comes with formal gardens, a landscaped park, a café, a restaurant and a gift shop. Take the guided tour to make the most of your visit. Open year-round and particularly dazzling at Christmas time with a Christmas market.
Visit the official Gothenburg site for more details on all these historical sites.
Buying the Gothenburg City Card is a good idea. You get free travel on public transport, free parking if you’re bringing your car and a myriad of free admissions to Gothenburg’s attractions and discounts in shops.
