Spaceport Sweden has collaborated with the ICEHOTEL, Kiruna Airport and Scandinavian Airlink to launch an exclusive space tourism flight that will allow clients to get an even closer look at the magical and mythical northern lights.
Discover the World (www.discover-the-world.co.uk) is the only tour operator in the UK with access to the new flight and has an allocation of seats exclusively for their clients. The premier flight takes place on the 15th January 2012 and there will then be three more flights on the 5th, 12th and 19th of February.
This exclusive new flight experience starts at ICEHOTEL with a short presentation about the northern lights and a transfer to Spaceport Sweden where an airplane with seats for nine passengers each with a window will take clients above the clouds. The flight will last approximately 1 hour.
A seat on one of the Northern Lights Flights will cost 4,305SEK (approximately £415) and can be booked via Discover the World as an excursion on any of their ICEHOTEL and Swedish Lapland holidays. The flight can also be chartered via Discover the World on any date between 1st January and 15th March at the cost of 37,445 SEK (approximately £3,610).
The Kiruna region is situated within the aurora zone and has among the best prerequisites in the world to see the northern lights. There are several climate zones in the region that together with good weather conditions increase the chances of seeing the northern lights. The solar activity, which causes the northern lights, peaks every 11 years, so the aurora borealis tends to be more frequent and intense at these times. Additionally, the years following a peak see increased northern lights activity - this winter, we are now reaching the peak and the next two winters are expected to be very active and exciting.
Mystery and wonder shroud the northern lights, for they do not conform to a pattern nor perform on demand. They can be fleeting and faint or elongated and bright. They can be pink, white, blue or most commonly green. They appear in many forms - perhaps as slithers of light arching across the sky, pulsating waves or billowing curtains of colour filling the darkness.
Discover-the-world.co.uk has a selection of ICEHOTEL and Swedish Lapland breaks available all of which offer excellent chances of the seeing the northern lights, prices start from £1093. Abisko National Park has statistically the clearest skies in the auroral zone and so offers the maximum chance of seeing the northern lights.
Discover the World’s ICEHOTEL & Abisko holiday starts from £1,195 per person and this includes their own return direct flights between London Heathrow and Kiruna, one night at Abisko in twin bedded room with private facilities, one night in a Snow Room and one night in a Kaamos Room at the ICEHOTEL. A breakfast buffet throughout is included, as well as a three-course evening meal at Abisko, chairlift excursion to the Sky Station and all transfers and services of a guide whilst in Abisko, airport taxes and a thermal one-piece suit, hat, boots and mittens to use while staying at the ICEHOTEL.
