Tracking elk and wolverine in the wilds of Sarek National Park.

Mattias Holmgren and partner Stina are based in Jokkmokk in Lapland and operate one of the few companies to run dog sled trips in Sarek National Park.

The tours by dog sled can last from 3 hours up to 10 days; ranging from a course in dog sledding to being part of a team tackling some of Sarek’s roughest terrain and tracking wild animals. On the 2, 8 and 10-day trips you are accompanied by an expert guide and musher and you get to drive your own dog team across the tundra and through forest, tracking elk, wolverine and lynx. You work as part of a team; feeding and looking after the dogs, chopping wood for the campfire and loading sleds.

But being at one with Europe’s last true wilderness makes it all worthwhile.
