Winter is simply wonderful with its encroaching dark evenings up until the snow falls bringing with it a winter glow.
Christmas time in Alfta, Hälsingland

We light candles and lamps in October and November to induce the glory of winter. Lanterns are lit in the towns and Christmas trees and displays are put up. At home we prepare for Advent Sunday (the first Sunday in December) when the Advent candlesticks are placed in the windows.Winter's undeniable charm comes from the snow flakes that fall from the skies and set like a bright and sparkling cover on the ground with snow crystals forming incredible patterns on the windows.Snow and ice-sculpting is an art form that is increasing in popularity. The winter park situated in Östersund is a centre for ice art, and the number of sculptures increases as more ice becomes available. For those wishing to try ice-sculpting, you can borrow an ice block along with the necessary tools on site.Events that are held with a snow and ice theme include the Kiruna snow festival among others. The highlight of the snow-sculpting competition is the ”Swedish Open Championships” which includes participation from international teams. The festival also features "yoik" (Lappish song), tantalizing food and lots of local handicraft. You can watch the annual reindeer race that runs through the town. Listen to music and the midwinter mass, and visit the new snow arena where the features include a culinary competition and kick-sledge race.
Check-in at the absolutely incredible ICEHOTEL.
