The Swedish mountains range over 1,000 kilometres, from Dalarna in central Sweden, to Treriksröset in the far north. They take in high alpine mountains and plains, glaciers, tundra, barren, rocky plateaus, foaming rivers and lush forest. They are home to elk, wolverine, wolves, bears and the endangered Arctic fox and many other species of flora and fauna. Forming part of the range is Laponia, an area of 9,400 square kilometres that is inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage site list.

The Swedish mountains are for everyone that loves the peace and quiet that only Mother Nature can offer. And peace and quite you will get in the wild and wonderful Abisko and Sarek national parks in the far north, or if travel to central Sweden and take in the Dalecarlia mountain range that is no less beautiful and awe-inspiring, but perhaps a little less arduous if you are hiking and trekking. This also where most of Sweden’s major ski resorts are located and as well as offering fabulous skiing for the whole family, they are also less busy than continental Europe resorts. What you should not miss though is the King’s trail (Kungsleden), the legendary 425 km-long hiking, trekking and skiing trail that winds its way from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south, taking in the high alpine terrain and Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain. As well as the aurora – the celestial illuminations that grace this part of the world. To the south lies the Arjeplog mountain region, including Ammarnäs and Hemavan, two beautiful mountain villages that are connected by the King’s trail. Along the 5-day hike between the two villages awaits the Vindel Mountains, a vast area of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, pine, spruce forests and mountain heath land. It is also home to wolverine, brown bear, lynx and the Arctic fox.
The best time to see the Northern Lights is March/April in Abisko National Park.
