At one with a wild wolf pack

In the animal kingdom perhaps only the great white shark is more misunderstood, misrepresented and generally gets a worse reputation than the wolf. This noble beast is the stuff of Egyptian mythology, of legend, of 'Little Red Riding Hood', of cults, and of cheesy horror movies.

But why is this?

Wouldn't it be good thing if this beautiful animal's reputation was restored to its rightful place? What better way to do this than you coming to beautiful Bergslagen in central Sweden to see and hear wolves up close, get to know them and then go tell your friends and family at home about it.

The place to spot wolves in Sweden is in Uttersberg, the smallest wolf pack territory in Sweden, where there is a fair chance, with an expert guide on hand, of spotting wolves in their natural surroundings.

This two-day (and night) tour kicks off at Ulvsbomuren guest house with a hearty lunch of local game, before heading out to the wilds of Bergslagen to track the wolf pack and spot other wildlife, such as elk and deer; both of which the wolf preys on, as well as fox, hare, owls and other birdlife. Your guide will show you tell-tale signs, such as fresh paw tracks, that the wolves are around. And believe us when we tell you that they're probably watching you. It's their territory after all.

Perhaps the highlight of the trip is when you reach the wolf watching cabin, which has windows on all sides to afford ardent wolf watchers the best possible chance of seeing this wonderful creature. After dinner, sleeping bags, mats and torches are handed out - and as the light from a kerosene flickers large on the ceiling and walls, the wait for someone to spot these shy creatures begins.

A full moon and the chilling howl of a wolf - does it get any better?

Västerås international airport is just one hour's drive from the Ulvsbomuren guest house.
