Jamtli

There is no better place to learn about Jämtland than Jamtli the county museum. And have fun with the family while you’re there.

Jamtli is an indoor and open-air museum within walking distance of the centre of Östersund and it gives a fascinating and entertaining perspective on the cultural history of the provinces ofJämtland and Härjedalen.

In the indoor part of the museum you can view the ‘crown jewels’ of the museum – the 1,000 year-old Viking Age Överhogdal tapestries. They are amazingly well preserved works of art, showing a very different and artistic side of the Vikings. Here too there are immersive, multi-media presentations of the history of the Vikings and the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland. In addition the museum has a unique collection of art and photographic archive of the region.

Jamtli Historyland is the open-air part of the museum and presents a living history of the region with actors playing the parts of farmers, workers and townspeople in genuine environments from the18th, 19th and 20th centuries. There are farmyard animals, farms and other environments that take you up close and personal with what it was like to live and work here. During the summer of 2010 Jamtli will put on a new activity where you can learn how to fight like a Viking and try archery – not to be missed.

There is an excellent restaurant at Jamtli called Restaurant Hov that specialises in regional dishes.
