Sweden’s own ‘gold rush’ happened here. And it might happen again.
It was here that gold was found and mined in Sweden for 100 years and there is still an active gold mining industry in the surrounding area. Which is why it is known as the ‘Gold of Lapland’ (Guldriket). One mine produced its first bar of gold recently.
There is much to do and see across the region including the remarkable St Anne’s Underground Church at Kristineberg, that lies at a depth of 90 metres and is the only underground ecumenical church in the world. Another remarkable experience here is the 13-kilometre long cableway above the treetops and waterways of Norrland with plenty of interesting activities around the site.
If you go to the Svansele Wilderness Centre you can see 650 wild, although stuffed, animals in scenes from their natural habitat.
