Once the proud home of a medieval Danish knight
Glimmingehus, a medieval manor in Skåne

Glimmingehus

This is the best-preserved medieval castle in Scandinavia.

Built in 1499 Glimmingehus was commissioned by wealthy knight Jens Holgersen Ulfstand, who apparently terrorised the farmers of the region in the service of the king of Denmark. This part of Sweden belonged to Denmark at the time.

This impressive castle is more of a ‘keep’, with a few nasty surprises inside if you were trying to do Mr Holgerson and his family ill. From above molten lead, or burning oil would have been poured on your head and the staircase inside was a death trap. The interior of the building would have been decorated with the finest furnishings of the day, as is proved by some of the fantastic finds made here, including Venetian crystal and Spanish ceramics.

Around the beautiful courtyard there is a restaurant serving medieval dishes, a café and there is also a fragrant herb garden to enjoy. There is a castle museum and guided tours year-round.
