Fårö was also home to Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman who first came to the island in 1960 looking for locations for “Through a Glass Darkly” and then returned here in 1965 to make the film “Persona”. It was during this time that he had a house built here with panoramic views of the sea.

If you are Bergman film buff you should not miss Bergman Week June 23 - 28 2009. Perhaps a visit will help you to better understand the now deceased great man’s work, perhaps it won’t. The very least you will take from a trip here are memories of a unique, ancient Baltic Sea isle.
Bergman made 6 films and a television series on Fårö and he surely derived inspiration from the barren, stony landscapes here. Why not visit Fårö for some inspiration?
Gotland and Öland, the two large islands outside Sweden´s east coast, are both exclusive destinations of unique scenic beauty and rare atmosphere, popular among Swedish holiday-makers but less known by international tourists.
The past decade in particular has marked a breakthrough for contemporary Swedish literature.
