    By the time December comes round, Sweden has very few hours of daylight. The sun drops out of sight in the afternoon. The first Sunday of Advent comes as an eagerly awaited sign that Christmas is approaching. Although by then, of course, the world of commerce has made sure we know what is coming — sales campaigns begin in mid-November and Christmas shop windows and street decorations are already in place.

    Nobel Prize Day

    Nobel Prize Day Every year, on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf presents the Nobel Prizes in economics, chemistry, physics, medicine, and literature. The ceremony takes place in Konserthuset in Stockholm. Afterwards, a banquet for 1,200 invited guests is held in Blå Hallen in Stockholms Stadshus (City Hall). One hundred years ago marks the tenth time the Nobel Prizes were awarded according to Alfred Nobel's will.

    Lucia festival

    At dawn on 13th December in Sweden thousands of young girls, dressed in white gowns, holding a lit candle and, with a crown of electric candles on a wreath on their heads, bring light to the darkness of Swedish winter. She is known as “Lucia” and she leads a procession of maidens and “star boys” also wearing white gowns and pointed hats with gold stars on them.
