Sweden’s 5th winner of the ESC
ABBA in 1974, Herreys in 1984, Carola in 1991, Charlotte Nilsson in 1999 and Loreen in 2012.
Loreen is from Stockholm, but moved with her parents to the small town of Gryta in the county of Västerås, just south of Stockholm. She made her musical breakthrough in 2004 in Sweden’s Idol 2004 television talent programme. Although she didn’t win it, she obviously got the television bug and worked as a segment producer and director on several tv reality shows broadcast in Sweden. She entered Melodifestivalen 2011 with the song ‘My Heart is Refusing Me’, but didn’t qualify for the final held in Stockholm. The song went on to become a hit in Sweden though. And with ‘Euphoria’ winning the Eurovision, the rest, as they say, is history.
Melodifestivalen is held annually in Sweden to determine Sweden’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest through six televised programes of four semi-finals, a Second Chance round and a grand finale. Since 2000 it has been the most popular programme on Swedish television and more than 4 million Swedes, or roughly half the population, watched Loreen win the final of Melodifestivalen 2012 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.
All roads in the gorgeous province of Skåne in southern Sweden lead to Malmö. The city is part of the expanding Öresund region and is joined to Copenhagen in Denmark by the mighty, arching Öresund bridge.
