Göta Kanal

Where is it?

The Göta Canal stretches from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem, Slätbaken, is 190 kilometres in length and contains 58 locks.

Canal museums

You have two museums to choose from. Oh! The excitement! Yes, we know. It’s true. You can go to The Göta Canal Exhibition in Motala for the canal’s history, and the Sjötorp canal museum for features on canal traffic.

Social hotspots

Hit any one of the twenty-one. Moor up and let loose at any one of the 21 marinas along the Göta Canal. They are definitive social hot spots and mooring is included in the canal fee.

By foot, bike or boat

You can rent boats, canoes and kayaks in many places along the canal. The old labour road along the canal is one of Sweden´s most popular bicycle routes, and there are also many attractive hiking trails along the way. The canal is an excellent sailing spot.

Must see

Check out the chain of locks at Berg, with seven connected locks lifting the boats some 18 metres from Lake Roxen.

Tips?

Allow for 6-7 days to pleasure boat between Mem and Sjötorp in peak summer season.
Get free WiFi at the harbours in Söderköping, Berg, Motala and the Sjötorp shipyard basin.

When?

Generally open season on the canal is May 4th until September 30th. Check with the Göta Canal website before booking.
