Welcome to Umeå – European capital of culture 2014!
Umeå, the largest city in northern Sweden, has been chosen European Capital of Culture 2014. The city offers a rich mix of different forms of culture. For example, besides museums famed for sculpture and contemporary art, there is also NorrlandsOperan, an opera company with its own symphony orchestra. As regards sporting cultures, the city’s sports offerings have a depth and diversity that is characteristic of Umeå.
Umeå is a youthful city. This is not just because the average age of its 118,000 residents is 38. The city’s two universities and their 37,000 students also contribute to Umeå’s special character in many ways. However, the entire region offers a unique breadth – city entertainment with wilderness and dizzying adventures just around the corner.
Umeå is the “Festival City”. MADE, Umeå Jazz Festival, Umeå Open and Umefolk are just a few of the many major annual events. On top of this, all the city’s clubs offer vibrant music scenes.
