Mountain hiking

From the Dalcarlian mountains in central Sweden to Laponia in the far north, the Swedish mountains form an unbroken chain more than 1,000 kilometres long. The glaciers, barren landscapes and jagged peaks of the north in the Abisko and Sarek national parks give way to the undulating mountains, meadows and forests of Dalecarlia in central Sweden.

Mountain hiking in Sweden

Every type of mountain hiking, trekking and mountaineering is available in the Swedish mountains. From the feral Sarek National Park that has no trail or facilities, to well-marked trails around the Grövelsjön Mountain Station in Dalcarlia, where you and the family can explore this pristine mountainous region.

No trip to Laponia would be complete without walking at least some of the King’s tral, the 425 km-long hiking, trekking and skiing trail that wends its way from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. The trail takes in Kebnekaise, alpine peaks and meadows, Arctic flora and fauna and, with some luck, the fantastic Northern Lights.

Throughout the Swedish mountains there is a well organised infrastructure of mountains stations and huts, youth hostels and other accommodation.
