Many of these castles, which bear witness to Sweden´s proud history as a Great Power in Europe, have been lovingly transformed into hotels, conference facilities and retreats, offering stylish and historic accommodation. Others are open to the public in daytime, with beautiful parks and gardens, interesting exhibitions and inviting cafés and restaurants.

Skåne in the south has more splendid castles than any other region in Sweden, some of which date back to the region´s long history as a Danish province. Häckeberga outside Malmö is a splendid weekend getaway in a magnificent natural setting. The Royal summer castle of Sofiero, near Helsingborg, is another classic day trip, with a famous park and rhododendron garden, an interesting shop and one of Skåne´s, and Sweden´s, top-ranking restaurants. The castle of Kronovall in Österlen is another unique weekend destination, and Wanås is a must for those interested in arts and gardening, with its spectacular sculpture park. On the west side, the Läckö and Gunnebo castles are magnificent sites, while the the Näs, Bränntorp, Knivsta and Ronnum manor houses are attractive alternatives for weekends or extended visits. These are just a few selected examples from a vast array of historical splendour.
