Gothenburg

Gothenburg boasts a number of museums of high international standard, some well worth a visit in their own right for those with special interests. Most of these are located in the city´s small and charming city centre, within convenient walking distance of each other. Housed in a beautiful landmark neoclassical building in front of the Götaplatsen square and the Kungsportsavenuen (”The Avenue”) boulevard, The Gothenburg Art Museum (Gothenburg´s Konstmuseum) prides itself on featuring the world´s most splendid collection of national-romantic Scandinavian late 19th century art, with many key works by artists such as Munch, Zorn, PS Krøye and Carl Larsson.

The famous collection also includes many international masterpieces, from the 15th to the 20th century, by artists such as Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, and many more. The museum, which is rated a three-star attraction in the Guide Michelin, also houses the world-renowned Hasselblad Center for photographic exhibitions, as well as an art hall for temporary art exhibitions.

The Röhss Museum of Design and Applied Art (Röhsska museet) on nearby Vasagatan has Sweden´s most comprehensive permanent exhibition of contemporary and historic Swedish design, as well as interesting temporary design and craft exhibitions, with an excellent shop and a popular café.

In recent years, two new major and internationally much publicized museums have opened in Gothenburg, both acclaimed for their spectacular contemporary architecture and their permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Universeum science discovery centre combines science, technology and adventure in an exciting building by Gothenburg´s own international star architect Gert Wingård, where visitors, among many other attractions, can walk through a glass tunnel surrounded by sharks and stingrays. The Museum of World Culture is housed in another magnificent and widely publicized new building, designed by London architects Cécile Brisac and Edgar Gonzalez. The museum features an ambitious and diverse programme of dynamic and exciting exhibitions from all around the world, based on experiences for all senses.
