Salvestaden
Kalmar was an important trading town as early as the 11th century. Its geographical location on the Danish border and by one of the Baltic Sea's most important shipping lanes made the town significant.

The old town was virtually totally destroyed in the 17th century, which meant new construction was moved from the vicinity of the castle to Kvarnholmen, where the town centre is now located.
When you enter the gates of Salvestaden you are transported back in time to the Kalmar of 1397. In a flash you are surrounded by people from a bygone time who invite you to be a part of their medieval life.
From the summer of 2003, Salvestaden's location is just south of Kalmar and it is here you can try your hand at all kinds of handicraft, cookery, painting, archery, fencing, jousting and much more. But you need to be on your guard as Salvestaden is home to a number of unsavoury types who prowl the streets.
