Carl von Linnés 300-th anniversary

Linné (1707-78), born Linnaeus - the name by which he is still known in English-speaking countries - was a great Swedish physician and botanist. In those days, botany was part of medicine.

Carl von Linnaeus

He is primarily famous for his Systema naturae, a classification system for plants, animals and minerals. Linné carried out several well-known journeys in Sweden, among others to the provinces of Lapland, Dalarna and Skåne, publishing detailed reports on the structure of their natural systems. His students, sometimes called his "disciples," also traveled around the world on similar journeys of discovery - to Japan, China, North America, South America, Arabia and the Arctic Ocean. Only in recent years have scientists been able to fully appreciate the breadth of Linné's brilliant research career. For example, he is considered perhaps the most important forerunner of Darwin. His stringent standards of empirical evidence for all conclusions were also important in the general development of natural science research methods.
