  • Change 29 November 2008 - 14 December 2008 Christmas at Skansen- traditional Christmas Market

    This year the traditional Christmas Market will be held on three weekends 29-30 November, 6-7 and 13-14 December. On the market there will be crowded with stalls selling traditional sausages, cheeses, handicrafts, spices and essences, Christmas decorations, embroidery, leather goods, Skansen's own handmade mustard, glass, bread and cakes, hand-knitted mittens, sugared almonds, tallows, honey, marzipan, crisp bread, smoked turkey, jams and marmalades, candy, children's books and masses of other irresistible items! There will be craft demonstrations and live music in the buildings where the tables also are set for Christmas dinner. Young and old can participate in the dancing games around the Christmas tree and make their own Christmas decorations.

    By the time December comes round, Sweden has very few hours of daylight. The sun drops out of sight in the afternoon. The first Sunday of Advent comes as an eagerly awaited sign that Christmas is approaching. Although by then, of course, the world of commerce has made sure we know what is coming — sales campaigns begin in mid-November and Christmas shop windows and street decorations are already in place.

    Jamtli Christmas Market in Östersund is one of Sweden's largest Christmas Fairs with 200 stalls and over 20 000 visitors every year. Here you can buy local food and handicrafts made all over rural Jämtland. At Jamtli Museums outdoor area from town quarter of 1895 to the Jamtli forest the exhibitors display their products and all the scents of Chirstmas is in the air.

  • Change 13 December 2008 Lucia

    Sweden is an egalitarian place these days, so any child can be chosen as Lucia for the annual procession at the local daycare centre, not just pretty ones with long blonde hair. The boys usually prefer to be brownies (tomtar) or ‘star boys’ (stjärngossar) in the procession, while quite a few girls agree to be Lucia’s handmaidens (tärnor).

    World Championships in Bandy will take place on the 18 – 25th of January 2009 and the host of the championships will be the City of Västerås. In Västerås there is a top modern arena for Bandy, ABB Arena, and it will be used as the main arena for most of the matches in the tournament.
